Metal Foil Tape Guide

Metal Foil Tapes are high performance products manufactured with top quality metallic material. These tapes perform capably in a wide range of applications from common tape tasks like masking, wire bundling and duct sealing to special tasks unique to foil tapes like heat shielding, light reflecting and heat conducting. Depending on the product line these tapes can offer specialized characteristics such as superior confromability, heat transfer, electrical transfer, sound dampening or vibration dampening. Metal Foil Tapes can also exhibit protective qualities by providing resistance to chemicals, moisture and UV rays. Due to the usage of high quality materials and the presence of unique characteristics these products are commonplace in Appliance, Construction, Aerospace, Automotive and Metal Finishing industries.


Standard Aluminum Foil Tapes like 3M 425 and 3M 3311 feature several unique advantages over tapes made with polymer backings. Aside from being constructed from malleable metals that increase a tape’s comformability during application, they are designed for low vapor transmission, thermal conductivity, heat and light reflectivity, UL recognized flame resistance and outdoor weathering. These qualities allow these types of products to be used for masking aircraft for paint stripping, covering sheeting tears on truck trailers or aircraft and splicing foils.


3M offers Specialty Foil Tapes optimized for specific purposes. Tapes made of Lead, Copper and Glass Cloth-reinforced Aluminum may be found in this lineup.

Lead Foils such as 3M 420 and 3M 421 feature the typical set of metal foil tape features like thermal conductivity and excellent conformability. However they also feature acid resistance for electroplating and anodizing applications and radiopacity for x-ray applications.

A Copper Foil Tape such as 3M 3313 offers premium performance due to its copper structure. Copper is a top grade metal that offers superior malleability for improved conformability as well as superior electric and heat conductivity. In addition Copper Tapes can provide EMI/RFI shielding and conductive acrylic adhesive.

Glass Cloth-reinforced Aluminum foil tapes like 3M 363 feature typical Aluminum Foil Tape characteristics like high temperature resistance, heat reflection and light reflection. In addition to these features the reinforced design of these tapes improves tensile strength allowing the availability of these features while the tape is concurrently used for bundling or sealing.


The majority of 3M’s Damping Foil Tapes feature a specially formulated viscoelastic acrylic polymer (VEP) designed for noise reductions, fatigue reduction and vibration damping. This specialized acrylic can convert vibrational energy into negligible heat which eliminates the noise and wear from vibrating parts. These characteristics make these products suitable for eliminating unwanted vibration on metal panels and support structures.
