STANDARD ALUMINUM FOIL TAPES
Standard Aluminum Foil Tapes like 3M 425 and 3M 3311 feature several unique advantages over tapes made with polymer backings. Aside from being constructed from malleable metals that increase a tape’s comformability during application, they are designed for low vapor transmission, thermal conductivity, heat and light reflectivity, UL recognized flame resistance and outdoor weathering. Protective Film Tapes are products that provide surface protection in order to avoid scratches and abrasion on vital items. These film tapes are commonly constructed with durable layers of Polyester, Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polyurethane or specially engineered Co-Extruded film mated to an adhesive for application onto a surface.
A protective tape’s film type is a major differentiating factor among the product lines found in the protective film tape market. When these film materials are compared at similar thickness gauges, the aforementioned film materials have unique characteristics and properties such as abrasion resistance, puncture resistance, UV durability, heat durability, confomability and visual transparency which play a major role when determining the correct product to use.

Both these UV series provide UV resistance for several months and allow for outdoor usage. The Carpet Tape series including products such as 3M 2E79 features a lineup of durable Co-Extruded film tapes designed for optimal conformability over irregular, textured surfaces such as carpets. The “A” series, a premium product line among all 3M Protective Film Tapes features some Co-Extruded entries such as 3M 25A10C intended for maximal abrasion resistance. Protective film tape offerings are manufactured at a wide variety of thicknesses. This will affect the amount of protective material placed over a surface. When comparing differing thickness gauges of the same film material, thicker gauges will be more rigid and more resistant to abrasion and damage. Tape liners are removable layers of a tape construction that play an important role of keeping a tape’s adhesive protected and preserved until the time of use. These liners are commonly made of film and paper materials in several varieties in order to accommodate a wide spectrum of industrial needs.
Film liners are made from durable clear films that add tensile strength to a tape suitable for high speed processes like rotary die-cutting.
Clear Polyester (PET)
Polyester liners (PET) are high strength film liners suited for high speed die-cutting and dispensing. (eg. Green Polyester Tape)
Clear High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners have similar strengths to PET liners allowing for high speed processing and dispensing. (eg. 3M 9172MP)
Paper liners come in different varieties of Densified Kraft and Polycoated Kraft. Densified Kraft liners are made to withstand rotary processing while Polycoated Kraft liners are manufactured to resist moisture and humidity.
Densified Kraft (DK)
Densified Kraft Liners are silicone treated on the adhesive side to cover the tape while die-cutting and are printable on the exposed side. (eg. 3M 927)
Extended Densified Kraft (XL)
Extended Densified Kraft Liners are similar to DK liners but the liner extends beyond the adhesive for easier handling and removal. (eg. 3M 465XL)
Polycoated Kraft (PCK)

Extensible Polycoated Kraft (EK)

3M 468 MP is an adhesive transfer tape ideal for bonding metal or plastics with high surface energy. This product is an industry standard and is widely used in the Aerospace, Appliance, Automotive,Electronics, Graphic Attachment and Transportation industries.
3M 468 MP is constructed with 58# Polycoated Kraft, a paper liner that is coated for enhanced resilience to moisture, wrinkling and curling. This liner allows 3M 486 MP the ability for die cutting and high speed processing.
3M 468 MP is constructed with 3M 200MP Acrylic Adhesive. This product requires a dwell time to achieve its maximum bond strength. The product will be initially repositionable immediately after application, but it will achieve a strong bond within minutes of the application and reach its maximum bond over several hours. The cleanliness and temperature of the application surface affect the quality of the bond that this product achieves.
USE AND APPLICATION
Due to 3M 468MP utilizing an acrylic adhesive care must be taken into the application of the adhesive for an effective bond. The surface should be clean and clear of impurities; prepare application surfaces with the purest possible solvents like 99% ethanol. Maintain atmospheric and surface temperatures at a range between 60°F and 100°F in order to ensure an optimal bond formation.
Starting in Q2-2013 3M began to phase in a new construction for its 3M 7610 product. The product will now feature a gray backside instead of its original green backside. 3M assures us that this change will not affect the performance, features or durability of the product but wishes for customers to be aware of the color differences during the transition period.
For several decades 3M has developed a wide variety of masking tapes to fit the needs of the industrial consumer. However, with such a wide variety, choosing the right product has become a very intimidating task. In order to help companies efficiently choose the most appropriate masking tapes for their applications, 3M™ introduced a 5 tier industrial masking system with 5 levels of increasing performance.
3M 101+ is a basic, economical masking tape suitable for light indoor usage like: marking, temporary holding, wrapping and sealing. However, it is recommended to reserve critical paint masking applications for higher level 3M masking tapes. (Withstands temperatures up to 150°F (66°C) for 30 minutes)
3M 201+ provides all the general use capability of 3M 101+ while providing better paint line performance, higher heat resistance and greater conformability. (Withstands temperatures up to 200°F (93°C) for 30 minutes)
3M 301+ is a distinctly yellow colored masking tape for better visibility and identification. This tape makes further improvements in strength, temperature resistance and paint performance. (Withstands temperatures up to 225°F (107°C) for 30 minutes)
3M 401+ is another incremental improvement in strength, temperature resistance and paint performance. This tape features a distinct green backing for visibility and identification. (Withstands temperatures up to 250°F (121°C) for 30 minutes)
3M 501+ is the ultimate choice for 3M’s industrial masking lineup. It features the best strength, conformability and masking performance with a significant improvement in temperature resistance to allow for higher temperature applications. There is a wide variety of tape adhesives available in the market, and the most common types found are typically categorized as rubber, acrylic or silicone adhesive. Use the following guide to determine which adhesive best suits your application. Rubber Adhesive: Notable for instant bonding and low costs. Rubber adhesive is best suited for indoor usage away from extreme temperatures. (ex. 3M 200 Paper Tape)

Typical usage: Several component parts need to be assembled together in a specific order. To minimize error during assembly, strips of 3M 200, a general purpose masking tape, are used as temporary labels to mark the parts and guide assemblers. The tape is only applied to the part for a couple hours and is cleanly removed once the parts have been assembled.
Acrylic Adhesive: Notable for long term bonding and UV resistance necessary for outdoor application. (ex. 3M 4941 VHB Tape)

Typical usage: Outdoor signs and displays must be mounted outside the stores of an outdoor shopping mall. These signs must be durable enough to last over a month while facing heavy traffic, weather exposure and direct sunlight. To construct these signs 3M VHB Acrylic tape is used for its strength, long term bonding and UV resistance.

Typical usage: A number of metal parts need to be painted and oven heated at 325° F for 30 minutes. Certain areas of the metal parts need to be masked and remain unpainted. The masking tape must also remain on the metal part during the bake cycle. For this application an M-Series polyester tape with silicone adhesive is used because the masking tape can be cleanly removed after enduring a high heat baking cycle. Other types of adhesive typically have lower heat thresholds and may leave residue on the parts upon removal.

3M VHB Tape is a high bonding acrylic foam tape designed to create a superlative bond between two surfaces strong enough to exceed the performance and functionality of traditional mechanical fasteners like screws, rivets and welds.
